Too Slow...

So I have not even managed to critique all the new shows I have been watching, and some of them have already been cancelled! I was disappointed to hear that 666 Park Ave and Last Resort have not been picked up for a whole season. I have really been enjoying both. I was not surprised AT ALL that Partners is not going to last, though I will admit I kept watching and did like it a little better than in the beginning, but basically it is no great loss. I just hope Sophia Bush finds something else soon b/c I love her.

I am done with critiques for awhile. I can't even remember what I have left. Arrow...it's okay. I am still watching but not loving. I am still having trouble not being confused that Oliver Queen is not the same Oliver Queen that he was on Smallville. Go figure. Nashville...I love it. I am sure I am biased because it is, after all, my town. It is fun though.  I love shows that involve music of any kind and I think the characters are interesting. Bedlam and Copper and two BBCA shows I have recorded on my DVR but have not had time to watch more than one episode of each so...jury still out on them. I think I will like Bedlam more but...only time will tell. There might be more but...I am not sure. Who cares at this point...lol.

So what to blog about now...I don't know! I think maybe just whatever strikes me at any given time.

666 Park Ave

So was I going to watch THIS new show? Ummm...if he (above) is in it...I am watching! Love, love, love Terry O'Quinn. He has been in SO many of my favorite shows and he is just awesome in all of them. His acting is worth watching for...I like him.

And then...seriously here is the larger cast photo...that is a lot of pretty boys. Well actually only 2 I guess but 2 favorites from older shows (Brothers & Sisters, and One Tree Hill) so...yeah I was in for this show from the get go.

And all of that is BESIDES the fact that it is a spooky thriller supernatural type show...ummm....my favorite!

So the question becomes...is it good?

I have to say yes so far, but with a caveat. This show is a total soap opera. I mean it is all about the beautiful people and who is sleeping with who and what kind of dress is she wearing and what is he going to do next...and true confession time...I LOVE that kind of show. It has to be well done, and I feel like this one is. It has to be interesting, and they have me intrigued. And did I mention the pretty boys? :)

Yeah I like this show. Look forward to it every week. It is sort of like a more tame American Horror Story...much less shock value but similar idea. I love it.

Partners

I really wanted to like this show. I mean, really, I did. It is made by the makers of Will & Grace (which I adore). It stars Sophia Bush (who I love). It looks silly and funny and quirky (all of which I like).

I don't like this show.

I just can't make myself care about these characters in any way, or even want to see them again. The show centers around 2 guys who have been friends since childhood. One a gay (very gay) guy and one a straight guy. Now they are adults and partners in business today. What kind of business you ask? I have no idea...because I just don't care enough to wonder or pay attention. They both have crazy attractive girlfriends/boyfriends that are way too hot for them. How did they get them? I don't know...and again, I just don't care. Much of the comedy, to this point anyway, centers on how their close friendship gets in the way of their love relationships (wait...did anyone tell these writers they already did that on Will & Grace) and...well you guessed it, I just don't care.

The show, in my opinion, is trying way to hard to BE Will & Grace and just isn't getting there. While I know that new casts often need time to work out chemistry and so-forth, I also believe that if you can't make me care after 3 episodes...you aren't worth any further effort on my part.

My first show of the season to be officially taken OFF the DVR list is...Partners. I hope you are better than you seem to be to me...

Last Resort

So I watched this show 3 times before I even considered writing a post about it...this show is confusing! I mean...I consider myself a pretty intelligent person, and figuring out TV show plots is one of my strengths in life...but I have no idea what is happening!

So the show opens with a bunch of Navy guys on a submarine (in my head...warning, warning...you hate military shows/movies...but I persisted). They are laughing about going home soon and it is made obvious that they are simply running drills and tests, NOTHING serious. Until...yeah of course the story changes. Suddenly they are sent a message that they are supposed to NUKE an island! Problematically (well in my opinion one of MANY  problems with this order) the order came through a secondary communication line. This line is ONLY to be used if the primary source (that would be DC) is destroyed. So they check the TV (on a sub?? awesome) and there is NO evidence of anything going on in DC. So our heroes of course hesitate and call DC to substantiate the order. Big no-no to disobey an order apparently...even a questionable one from questionable sources. Basically what it boils down to is that no one gives them a good answer and instead a second American ship is sent to kill them!

So now it is on...the original sub (a test run of the newest and most awesome weapon EVER) is facing off with America! They don't (and neither do we as an audience) know what is going on or if they are even in the right for sure, but they stand their ground. And that is basically what the show is about (to make a long complicated story very short and a tiny bit less complicated).

I am kinda liking it A LOT more than I thought I would. I zone out some during the super military parts, I just don't care or like them. This adds to the confusion of the show for me, but the confusion is kind of what I like. It is interesting. I have no real guesses at who is behind anything. I find myself curious but not sure who is the "bad guy" vs who is the "good guy". I totally don't know. It feeds on the paranoia of the day and the dystopian love affair I have had for years, but that has finally come to the general public as well (thank you Hunger Games). I have fervent hopes (but cautious ones at best) that they can keep this up. I love not figuring it all out!

So for now anyway, Last Resort stays on my DVR!

oh and I guess I should mention...since it is the real reason I chose to try this show at all...it stars Scott Speedman...yeah I know...shut up

The New Normal

So, contrary to what I said in my last post about comedy sitcoms not being my thing, I find myself about to review another one! I do not want to review any show until I see it at least twice and/or decide not to watch it anymore. Seems fair. The only show that I have seen twice so far is The New Normal. This post I have been struggling with. This show is something to struggle with! I was attracted to The New Normal because it is made by the same creators as Glee. I adore Glee, cannot get enough of it! So I wanted to give this series a chance as well.

There are similarities...the biggest is that both shows push the boundaries...big time! This show centers on two gay men who want to have a baby. Obviously this takes some work. They have opted to get a surrogate mother and the first episode is about choosing that mother. The one they end up with is a single mother who is trying to make enough money to have a better life for her daughter and herself. Together this unlikely group forms a "family" in what is apparently considered...the new normal.

Now immediately I have lost some people who refuse to watch a show about a gay couple, admittedly if that makes you uncomfortable this show is not for you. Then I think I will lose some MORE people who object to this family being considered 'normal'. That is fair in some ways as well. What I would say, though, is that they have a point. Normal is no longer mother, father and 2.5 children (whatever that .5 ever meant...I always found it creepy). That rarely exists anymore. Do I find that sad? Sure I do. I am one of the lucky few! My parents are still together and will be celebrating 40 years of marriage next summer...I find that AWESOME! I also know it is not normal. I have very few friends who can say the same of their own parents. At age 35 I have as many (or more) divorced friend than I do happily married friends. Children who have only one household these days are the exception, not the norm.

Now...does all of that make 2 gay men and a single mom knocked up with their baby NORMAL? I don't know...what I do know is that the show is heartfelt and touching. It deals with hard issues about what a baby deserves and who deserves to be parents and what is proper or not proper. These are things we have to be willing to deal with if we want to live in today's world. They just are. This show deals with them much the way Glee does...in a very irreverent and over the top way that I find hilarious. Not everyone does, I know. I would NOT recommend this show to everyone. Most in my extended family would find it offensive and will probably not like the fact that I like it. I accept that. For me, however, this is a show that will stay on my watch list, at least for awhile. Last week it made me cry. It made me stop and think about how shamefully some people are treated. I think TV that can make me do that is good TV.

Fall means Football for some...but TV for me!

So fall has arrived and I sigh in happiness. I LOVE fall. I love the cooler weather, I love the colors and the leaves, and lets just be honest...I LOVE the TV!! It is premier time on TV and being a self proclaimed TVacholoic that just makes me happy!! I am a total junkie. Obviously all of the shows I already love coming back bring joy to my heart, but also I adore watching the pilots of all the new shows. I mean...as many as I can possibly get in. I might not continue to watch them if they don't strike me as good, but I try to see at least one episode of everything that looks even feasibly good to me.

This is a lot of work! I mean, no kidding, that is a lot of TV to get in! Thank goodness for the invention of the DVR...it is one of my favorite things in the world. (how shallow am I? EEK). Since Michael has come to live with me watching all this TV is even harder. I only really watch when he is either not home or after he goes to bed. I don't want our time together to be all TV time. (I know, total hypocrite...deal with it).

So all of that to say...I have decided to TRY to blog about all of the new shows I watch this year. Just a brief overview of what the show is and what my thoughts were. No real reason for this, I just thought it might be fun. Please feel free to jump in with comments on your own thoughts...that will make it much better! So first up...a comedy sitcom with a comedy favorite (Matthew Perry...I adore him)

GO ON (Tuesdays on NBC)

So comedy sitcoms are not really my favorite, or maybe I should say they have not traditionally been my favorite, but lately there have been some great ones (I am addicted to New Girl...) so I decided to give a couple of the new ones a chance this year. This one was a no-brainer. For me if Matthew Perry is in something, I am probably going to watch it. I love him! I think he is hilarious and yet emotional as well and I find I can always relate to his characters. So since he was the star of Go On it made it to my 'to watch' list right away.

Go On is about a sports newscaster whose wife has recently passed away...sounds hilarious right?....Hmmm. But naturally, it is. The show focuses on Perry's character learning to deal with his wife being gone. He attends a support group with other characters who have lost people, and I do mean characters! They are all quirky and odd and almost over the top, but also portray all the crazy ways that we, as real people, find to deal with grief. We also see him at work with his friends and co-workers and how he deals with that changing dynamic as well.

I have seen 2 episodes of this show so far and I have to say, I love it! It makes me laugh, which is a good thing. Sometimes my love of dramas can be a bit overwhelming as sitting down to watch TV often ends in hysterical sobbing and abject depression b/c I get REALLY involved in the lives of my characters! This show is real and parts of it can be sobering, but it is so funny that you find yourself laughing instead of crying...how great it would be if we could find ways to do that in real life!

So my opinion? Love it! Going to keep watching and think you should too! As an aside, though, I will say that I worry this sitcom might not last. Unfortunately Perry has had a string of good shows that just didn't get the attention they deserved (Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip was AMAZING!! Mr. Sunshine maybe not amazing but hilarious and fun. Etc. Etc.) This show does feel similar to Mr. Sunshine in a lot of ways, so I hope it does not follow in that shows footsteps of only lasting for a single season.
